Whilst the "great plague", which is generally thought to have been bubonic plague (pasteurella pestis), was ravaging Europe around 1413 there was a small band of thieves ready to steal from the dying and dead. They confidently strode into homes and robbed the hapless victims without fear of contracting the highly contagious plague. Once finally caught in France and convicted, the Royal family at the time were eager to know of their secret to immunity from such a devastating disease that carried away almost 90% of the population. In due course it was discovered that the thieves were directly descended from apothecaries (ancient pharmacists) and had been passed down secret recipes for protection from such diseases. The secret formulation was revealed to have been a blend of plant oils or essential oils which when rubbed liberally over their hands and faces was able to protect them from being infected. It is believed the blend would probably have been a mix of many herb essential oils including clove, rosemary, cinnamon and thyme. Although I would not recommend anyone to rub pure essential oils directly onto their skin, it may be useful to vaporize essential oils in the home or at work, not only to create a wonderful scent but also as an aid to protection against airborne germs, bacteria and viruses. In winter I use an electric oil burner with my favourite blend of 4 drops of Lemon to 3 drops each of eucalyptus and peppermint. I use this blend both at work and home. I have often been pleasantly surprised when, after waking with a mild sore throat to find it has abated by mid morning. Whether this would have become a cold or worse I am unsure but even if the essential oils are not protecting me I am quite happy to have the wonderful aroma around me while I relax or work. Have you ever thought of how often you vacuum your home? It’s wonderful that modern vacuum cleaners have great efficient filters and often two or more! They should of course be kept as clean as possible, preferably every time the cleaner is emptied. They are excellent for trapping the smaller dust particles while cleaning but have you thought of using a few drops of your favourite pure essential oil dripped onto the filter. Two or three drops of lemon myrtle, lavender or pine can leave a wonderful aroma around your home, not to mention the benefit of enjoying the fragrance while doing your chores.   2. Why not add one or two drops of pure essential oils to your washing powder or liquid to leave their wonderful aromatic scent on your clothes. Another possible method is to drip a couple of drops of pure essential oil onto a piece of cloth and adding to your laundry in the tumble dryer. Favourite essential oils of mine would have to be lavender, lemon myrtle or eucalyptus.   3. Motherhood can be a wonderful experience, especially the joy of bonding during the final evening feed whether by bottle feeding or breast feeding. We have to be mindful that pure essential oils are very potent and should not be allowed onto the skins of either breast feeding mothers or babies. That is not to say that the use of aromatherapy has to be completely avoided at this time. In fact there can be wonderful positive benefits to be had if used with caution. A couple of drops of chamomile, lavender or a mixture of both dripped onto a tissue or piece of cloth in the bedroom or nursery (out of reach of children) can have a wonderful calming affect on both mothers and babies to unwind, relax and enhance the bonding experience of both mother and child. John Schofield Bonvale Creations.   What's The Big Deal It's Still Peppermint!   Peppermint essential oil is peppermint oil right?  Hmmm..... well not exactly, there are at least 30 different species of peppermint and it's one of the most popular tonic herbs.  Peppermint essential oil comes from a variety of species mentha piperita and mentha arvensis are probably the two most common varieties used to extract pure essential oil and they are two very different oils. The difference in aroma is quite apparent and the retail price of mentha arvensis (sometimes called by its common name of corn mint or wild mint) should reflect the lower cost of the wholesale price. Mentha piperita, sometimes referred to as true peppermint, is in my opinion the better quality for aromatherapy purposes and the cost may be slightly higher but well worth it.  It might be worth mentioning here that mentha spicata although with a similar sounding Latin name is actually spearmint. Of all the mint, I think that peppermint essential oil is the most popular and useful in terms of aromatherapy. The highly aromatic peppermint essential oil is immensely uplifting and tends to encourage focusing of the mind and may also be useful as a study aid especially when blended with lemon essential oil.  Peppermint blends very well with rosemary, lemon, marjoram, eucalyptus and lavender.
